Atsidi Sani – First Navajo Silversmith
The Navajo were the first Native Americans to be introduced to the technique of silversmithing. And the first Navajo to make use of silver was Atsidi Sani, who had been amongst the Navajo prisoners incarcerated by Kit Carson at Fort Sumner in 1863.
Atsidi Sani was already doing some silver work around 1850, but his later contacts with Mexican ironworkers enhanced his skills at silversmithing. He became well-known for his skills, and he taught them to other Navajos.
