Native American Jewelry Making
Native American Indians have a long tradition of jewelry making. Using beadwork and silver, Native Americans, especially in the south-west, have fashioned jewelry with beautiful designs and intricate workmanship.
The Navajo and Zuni are renowned for their stunning craftsmanship. As a result of the impact of the so-called Spanish Conquest, they were introduced to the technique of silversmithing – the melding and fashioning of silver. Previously, their use of metals such as iron and copper involved manual hammering and etching.
With the skills of silversmithing, first learned by the Navajo, and then transmitted to the Zuni and other Native Indians, the use of silver in their jewelry has reached new levels of sophistication.
